1. 绝大部分机场三字代码来源于城市名称的英文缩写

2. 部分机场三字代码来源于城市英文名缩写+“识别码”

美国洛杉矶LosAngeles，取简称LA，添加一个识别码“X”，成为LAX。

3. 跟城市名称无关的机场名称，则代码直接取自机场的名称。比如一些纪念伟人的机场，如纽约肯尼迪国际机场JFK。

4.北美部分三字代码采用无线广播区域代码"Y"，“W”和"K"

加拿大机场三字代码比较特殊，基本上都是以Y开头。航空业发展早期，无线电广播也影响力较大，北美区域被划分为三块，每一块区域发身台前都加一个自己区域的一个特定字母。当时，密西西比河以东的地区为W,以西地区为K,而加拿大是Y.后来加拿大就成了以“Y+城市英文名/机场英文名”来命名机场三字代码的特殊存在。比如：温哥华(Vancouver)机场的三字代码是YVR
