Nanning is the capital of Guangxi autonomous region in southern China。 It is known as the "Green City" because of its abundance of lush tropical foliage。

Nanning is located in the southern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 160 km from the border with Vietnam.。It has an area of 22,293 square kilometers。

The city is located on the north bank of the Yong River, the chief southern tributary of the Xi River, and lies some 30 km below the confluence of the Yu and the Zuo rivers。

 The Yong River (which later becomes the Yu River) affords a good route to Guangzhou and is navigable by shallow-draft junks and motor launches, even though it is obstructed by rapids and sandbanks。

南宁，简称“邕”，别称绿城、邕城，是广西壮族自治区辖地级市、首府、北部湾城市群核心城市，国务院批复确定的中国北部湾经济区中心城市、西南地区连接出海通道的综合交通枢纽。

2017年1月，国务院发布《北部湾城市群发展规划》，将南宁定位为面向东盟的核心城市，支持建成特大城市和边境国际城市；2018年11月入选中国城市全面小康指数前100名；2018年重新确认国家卫生城市（区）。2023年，第三届全国青年运动会将在广西举行，广西计划采取以南宁市为主，其他城市辅助的办赛模式举办青运会。

2021年5月，《广西壮族自治区国民经济和社会发展第十四个五年规划和2035年远景目标纲要》高标准建设南宁都市圈，提升南宁核心城市综合功能，“十四五”时期，广西将促进形成以南宁市为核心，柳州、桂林市为副中心。
